Compared to Chinese, which tends to avoid saying “yes,” I find it more interesting that Japanese tends to avoid saying “no.” Japanese people generally dislike direct refusal or negation, and instead prefer expressions such as “not exactly the same,” “yes, but…,” or “there are some differences.”

If memory serves, the phrase 'not bad' is much more common in the English-speaking world than in China.
